Edo tops as NCDC confirms 556 new cases and other #COVID-19 updates across Nigeria

Nigeria recorded 556 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported.

Unlike recent days, Edo recorded the highest number of new cases, closely followed by Lagos.

According to the health agency, 11 deaths were also recorded, bringing the fatality from the virus to 789.

Foreign affairs minister tests positive for COVID-19

Nigeria’s foreign affairs minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, has tested positive for coronavirus.

According to him, he was confirmed positive Saturday, after his fourth test. The minister took to Twitter Sunday afternoon, to announce his health status.

Did my fourth Covid-19 test yesterday at the first sign of a throat irritation and unfortunately this time it came back positive. That is life! Win some lose some. Heading for isolation in a health facility and praying for the best. #StayHomeSaveLives #COVID19 #PTFCOVID19”, he wrote.

Madagascar herb can’t cure COVID-19, says FG

The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) says its findings have shown that “COVID Organics”, the herb produced by Madagascar, cannot effectively cure coronavirus.

The drug, which is branded as herbal tea, was launched on April 20, with its main ingredient being sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua), a plant of Asian origin from where the antimalarial drug, artemisinin, came.

ASUU asks FG to close schools until 2021

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has advised the federal government to allow schools remain closed until 2021 to ensure adequate preparations before reopening.

Schools have been closed since March as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘Nigerians’ carefree attitude responsible for rising cases of coronavirus’

Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Anambra, Dr. Joe Ugboaja, has said that the carefree attitude of Nigerians is responsible for the increasing cases of coronavirus in the country.

Ugboaja, who is Director of Clinical Services, Research and Training, as well as Chairman, COVID-19 Task Force of the hospital, stated this at the weekend while fielding questions from newsmen at Nnewi on activities of the Task Force.
