Abia commences mass testing and other #COVID-19 updates across Nigeria

Following successful training of its Frontline Contact Tracers for coronavirus testing in the 17 council areas of Abia, its COVID-19 Committee yesterday, commenced statewide mass community testing for the virus.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Osuji, who spoke at Apumiri Ubakala, Umuahia South Council Area, disclosed that the exercise represented another attempt to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the rural communities.

LASEPA seals Farms City, others for violating COVID-19 rules

For the second time since the outbreak of COVID-19, the Lagos Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has, sealed up Farms City on Admiralty Way, Lekki and Ajah Quilox Pool and Bar for contravening different sections of the state environmental law and constituting a setback to the state government’s efforts to flatten the curve of the pandemic.

The enforcement, which was carried out in the late hours Saturday, and early hours of Sunday on the Lekki-Ajah axis, was led by the Special Assistant to the General Manager, Adebola Odunsi, and Director, Enforcement, Compliance and Monitoring, Kayode Bello, wherein two other entertainment and restaurant outlets, Page One in Ajah and Bien Mange in Abraham Adesanya Estate, were also sealed.

‘Nigeria’s N2.3trn COVID-19 stimulus isn’t enough’

The chief economist for PwC Nigeria, Andrew Nevin, says Nigeria’s approved N2.3 trillion COVID-19 fiscal stimulus is small when compared to the size of the economy.  

Nevin said the ideal stimulus package for Nigeria at this time should be between N15 trillion to N25 trillion. He also admitted that the federal government does not have the funds for such fiscal stimulus.

Nigeria’s COVID-19 death toll exceeds 800

Almost four months after the first coronavirus-related death was recorded, more than 800 people have now died across the country.

With 12 new fatalities, a total of 801 people have now died of COVID-19 complications in 35 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

How Nigeria fails to meet 2 million target for COVID-19 testing

Nigeria is currently off-track to achieve its set target of conducting two million COVID-19 tests within three months.

The ambitious target was expected to be met between May and July 2020, as set by the Federal Government as a  strategy to bridge the gap in testing and containing the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
