One-third COVID-19 patients have recovered and other updates across Nigeria
About one-third of Nigeria’s total confirmed COVID-19 cases have now been discharged.
This is according to the update of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for Monday.
Of the current total of 12,801 cases confirmed in 35 states and the FCT, 4,040 patients have been discharged.
Ondo governor highlights COVID-19 concern
The governor of Ondo, Rotimi Akeredolu, has described the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state as alarming.
Speaking at a media briefing on Monday in Akure, the state capital, Akeredolu stated that the trend of increase in the number of COVID-19 cases is exponential and poses real threats to the state.
Providing details of the cases recorded in Ondo, the governor said they include an American, traders, journalist, clergyman, businessmen, civil servants, artisans, health care workers, the young and the old across Akure south, Odigbo, Owo, Ose, Akure north, Ondo west, Okitipupa, Akoko south-east, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo and Ifedore local government areas.
CBN sets N50m limit for vaccine research grants
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has set a N50 million on the grant available to research activities for the development of vaccines to combat infectious diseases.
In the healthcare sector research and development guidelines published on its website, the CBN said a N500 million has also been set for grants approved for the development and manufacturing of drugs.
“Specifically, the HSRDIS is designed to trigger intense national R&D activities to develop a Nigerian vaccine, drugs and herbal medicines against the spread of COVID-19 and any other communicable or non-communicable diseases through the provision of grants to biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies, institutions, researchers, and research institutes for the research and development of drugs, herbal medicines and vaccines for the control, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases,” the apex bank said.
Govt worried about breach of rules by churches, mosques
Weekend’s reopening of churches and mosques in some states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has become a source of worry to the Federal Government due to the breach of guidelines.
The Federal Government last week released protocols that should form the basis of discussions between the state governments and religious leaders before the reopening of worship centres.
