Nigeria enters phase two of lockdown easing and other COVID-19 updates across Nigeria

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 Control Monday, announced phase two of the ease of lockdown by gradually reopening the economy.

National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr. Aliyu Sani, said, “The goal of phase two over the next four weeks is to balance public safety with protecting livelihoods as well as allowing the full restoration of economic activities across the country.

We are not opening places of worships across the board. We are saying that opening is conditional and it is based on these clear-cut guidelines and would only cover regular church and mosque services.”

SGF says Nigeria cannot isolate all those who test positive for COVID-19 

The secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, says there is not enough infrastructure to isolate everyone that tests positive for COVID-19. 

Nigeria had recorded more than 10, 000 COVID-19 cases as of June 1.

Bayelsa seals six churches for breaching COVID-19 guidelines

The Bayelsa government has sealed off six churches for breaching “operational protocols” required to conduct services amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

On May 7, the state government relaxed its ban on religious and social gatherings but said churches should not hold services with more than 50 people at a time.

It also asked worship centres to provide hand-washing facilities, and that members must wear face masks with strict observance of social distancing in sitting arrangement.

A Premium Times investigation across the six geo-political regions revealed that state governors who had originally called for the ban on interstate travels did very little in their domains to ensure full compliance; with some choosing rather to erect easily breached flimsy gates at major boundaries with neighbouring states which did little or nothing to stop motorists willing to bribe security officials or residents of surrounding villages from travelling through.
