‘FG to use schools, hotels as isolation centres’ and other COVID-19 updates across Nigeria

Nigeria’s federal government will consider using schools and hotels as isolation centres for COVID-19 patients if the need arises, an official said.

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, made this known at the daily Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing on Thursday.

Ehanire said Nigeria currently has over 112 treatment and isolation centres in the 35 states and FCT with over 5,000 beds.

‘Nigeria records more deaths from other illnesses than COVID-19’

Nigeria has recorded more deaths from hospitals’ refusal to attend to patients with other illnesses than from COVID-19 virus, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has said.

Mustapha, while speaking at the daily Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing Thursday, said there have been reports of refusal by some medical institutions to treat patients for fear of contracting the COVID-19 virus.

Buhari asks for Africa’s debts to be cancelled

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked “developed countries” to cancel debts owed by “poor countries” to enable them recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a UN-backed high-level meeting which held virtually, Buhari said global solidarity was the hope for humanity in this pandemic.

Kogi insists state has no COVID-19

The government of Kogi has maintained that the state is free of COVID-19, accusing the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) of having an agenda to spread the disease across the country.

On Wednesday, NCDC had announced that Kogi recorded two cases of the virus.

But Haruna Audu, Kogi health commissioner, had said the state government would not accept any “fictitious” claim from the NCDC.

‘Airports to reopen soon’

Major airports in the country will in the “next few days” reopen after weeks of inactivity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

The airports are the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja; Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja; Aminu Kano Arport, Kano and the Port Harcourt Airport, Choba, Rivers State.
